2017 Artist-in-Residence Exhibition: ADAM REDD - Fountain of Youth

MAY 13 - JUNE 10, 2017

Closing Reception: Saturday, June 10, 2017

Our current artist-in-residence, ADAM REDD, holds an Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and a BA in Ceramics from California State University in Chico. In Spring 2016, Redd served as the ceramics professor sabbatical replacement at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. He has spent the last few summers as a studio resident and acclaimed chef at Watershed Center for the Ceramics Arts in Newcastle, ME. A native of California, he is currently living in the eastern U.S. expanding his studio practice. This exhibition is the culmination of his eight month residency at Arch.

"My current body of work deals with formal issues of color, shape and surface treatment. Simultaneously a large part of the making is a lean to the immediate sense of touch inherent in clay and a refusal to let the guilt of craft over take my thinking. Working within the motif of pottery as decoration I have been creating vessels that serve to only function in that way. Things are heavy and bottoms are left off of objects.
These are sculptures of pots."

OPENING EVENT: Adams Puryear - Secret Wars 4.7 · SATURDAY, MAY 6th

RECEPTION: SATURDAY, MAY 6 from 1 - 5 PM

Please join us Saturday, May 6th from 1-5 pm for an opening event and artist's reception for Secret Wars 4.7, an installation by Adams Puryear.

For the second winter in a row, we have invited an artist to occupy our main gallery as their private studio space for three months while creating and installing a solo exhibition. The installation/experimental residency was designed to meet the unique needs of installation-based sculptors who require more time than most galleries can typically accommodate. This year's residency was awarded to Adams Puryear, a Brooklyn-based artist originally from the south coast of Massachusetts.

Secret Wars 4.7 is the culmination of 5 months of research between January and May 2017 at Arch.  The winter of 2017 officially entered the U.S. into a post-truth political climate that was most reflected in the media’s intense interest in future speculation.  During this time I was taking long solitary walks on nearby beaches, attempting to leave the bombardment of news and trading the noise of the media for the noise of the sea.  Eventually I noticed sea noise and media noise both contain indecipherable answers hidden under multiple layers of information.

Secret Wars 4.7 attempts to reflect this by presenting two 4’ tall white porcelain sculptures that emit a loud murmur, encompassing the audience and producing layers of disorienting noise.  Each of the oppositional sculpture-monuments have graphic plaques, small objects, and multiple thin drooling masses of colored material slowly moving to the floor, symbolizing the spectacle culture we find ourselves in today.

ADAMS PURYEAR attempts to process the clutter of contemporary life into physical 3D artworks. In his practice he thinks about images moving over the Internet, performative sculpture, collaged media, power, comic books and different senses of loss.

PURYEAR received a BFA in sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art in 2004 and an MFA in ceramics from Indiana University in Bloomington in 2012. He exhibits his arts regularly in NYC and abroad, and has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Art and Design in NYC, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, the Icheon World Ceramic Center in Republic of Korea and Museum of Modern Art in Dominican Republic.  In 2006, Puryear founded FPOAFM Nomadic Studios: an experimental, project-driven craft collective that is engaged in contemporary craft and art discourse. Adams currently lives and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY.

Arch Contemporary is located at 18 East Road in Tiverton Four Corners in Tiverton, Rhode Island. All receptions and exhibitions are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the gallery directly by phone or e-mail.
