My work in ceramics is heavily influenced by my Chinese American heritage, revolving primarily
around cultural identity and the homogenization of different Asian American experiences. I am
drawn to the traditional forms and methods I witnessed throughout my travels in Asia, but my
goal is to contemporize the surface using patterns. My work takes the 2-D language of textiles
and transposes it into 3-D forms to create a new language through my own interpretation.
Throughout my patterns, the viewer can see a common theme of an isolated element, most
often a single red element amongst a sea of blue. I am injecting myself into the pattern through
the single red element as my own experience as a Chinese American. In doing so, I am in turn
expressing my experience in this history of pattern.
